Sound is a body held
June 1- 4, 2023
2 hours
Hurlin and Orrico experiment with the capacity to extract sound from material through full-bodied interventions and the fallout of their fatigue. As the synapses between their dialogic play fade, it is the memory, resonance, and motion of sound that mediates the performers’ actions and determines collective course. Sound holds all bodies to the darkened space, anticipating variation and listening for the emerging direction. The work responds to the site in each iteration, leveraging movement from the architecture, charting opportunity for resonance, and sourcing local material and objects.

DIE NO DIE (Arkansaw) by Matty Davis
The Momentary/ Crystal Bridges, Bentonville, AR
August 4 - 6, 9:00p
Presenting Artists: Will Arbery (CA), Karen Castleman (AR), Matty Davis (CA), Lyle Oberman (AR/UT), Blake Worthey (AR), Tony Orrico (IA)
Situated outdoors at night and traversing approximately 800 meters throughout the Momentary campus, Die No Die is a performance structured in the spirit of a shooting star—bursting into view, scintillating, to be lunged after, beheld, or lost. The intensity of its arrival initiates idiosyncratic choreographies designed to “send the heart deeper,” as both performer(s) and audience negotiate the contours of meaning, connection, and control.
One after another, in linear succession, each performer comes crashing into space, initiating an embodied journey through specific challenges, demands, and freedoms. Each signals to the next through the felt beat of their hearts.
Like maps are used to familiarize a person with the terrain, routes, and possibilities of a geography or place, Die No Die involves a publication that details architectures, flora, types of ground, and qualities as they relate to the performers and the performance’s trajectory. This piece of publishing—a preparatory exchange between the artists and the audience—will be mailed in advance of the performance and is intended to initiate a relationship based on care and responsibility that is carried into the performance itself.

Headmaster is the art magazine for man-lovers. The magazine's editors write assignments for artists, who then create original projects for each issue. The issue features original projects by twelve artists and artist duos who have explored sports-related topics including locker rooms, cheerleading, pageantry and performance, Muscular Christianity, the men’s rhythmic gymnastics floor program, problematic gay wrestler Pat Patterson, and the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.

THE ASSIGNMENT: Pageantry & Performance
Many areas of the world are known for sporting events that showcase regional culture while also highlighting the agility and skill of local athletes. These sports are sometimes part of larger cultural festivals or rituals and are often surrounded by other celebrations. Examples range from the violent, chaotic Calcio Storico of Florence to the non-violent modern Tahteeb stick fighting of Egypt to the Makepung Buffalo Races of Bali. These all share elements of tradition, spectacle, and a festival-like environment. Using one culturally or regionally specific sport as a launching point, explore the intersections of sport, pageantry and performance.
