Tony Orrico: Fit Into the Imprint
May 11 - June 29, 2024
The exhibition, is Orrico's first show in Madrid, and is a brief compendium of three of his most emblematic series of work: Textiles, where he investigates the notion of a mental loom, creating tessellations from phrases derived from personal memories, handwritten in an ambidextrous and mirrored way, generating changing patterns that become a kind of mental trails; Penwald Drawings, a series of performative works that explore the symmetry and balance of the cerebral hemispheres, investigating the idea of reflection and bifurcation; Hand Movie, is a video work that pays tribute to Yvonne Reiner, an artist who has deeply influenced Orrico’s work. This is a multiplied and expanded reinterpretation of Reiner’s original work from 1966, where Orrico investigates the autonomy and agency of the hand in relation to the rest of the body and memory.
The conjunction of these works leads us to critically reflect on the interaction between the body, memory, oblivion and the construction of identities. The movement freezes in the lines of the drawing, which becomes a witness to the inquires of the artist’s memory. Like graphic cross-sections of a map of neural connections, mental concepts spread across the paper; They arrive, deviate, mutate and then stop in time.
